Spider-Man 2: Will Insomniac Kill Peter Parker?

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Spider-Man 2 is almost upon us and there are lots of questions going into our upcoming adventures with Miles and Peter. Let's Explore a question that has yet to be brought up -- Will Insomniac kill off Peter Parker?

The Ultimate Universe

In the year 2000, The Ultimate Comics Universe was created, it served as a reboot of sorts that existed outside of the main Marvel Comics cannon. In this Universe, a modernized version of Peter Parker was killed, following a battle with the Green Goblin. Peter died from his injuries from the fight, which included taking a bullet that was intended for Captain America. It would later be revealed that a young boy witnessed this entire tragic battle, but his fear kept him from helping Spider-Man. His identity would later be revealed in Ultimate Fallout #4. While he was a passive observer in Ultimate Comics, in Sony's Into the Spider-Verse he was present at Peter's death.

Miles in Marvel's Spider-Man & His own Game

The events of Marvel's Spider-Man would see Miles receiving a similar spider bite as a one Oscorps replicated spiders had found it way into Miles' bag. A post credits scene sets up Miles' training as an all-new Spider-Man, leading into his own game, Spider-Man Miles Morales. This lead to Miles protecting Harlem in Peter's asbsense. Miles' "guy in the chair" Genki reminds him...

"When you say 'Spider-Man' you always mean the other one. You're Spider-Man. You can fix this. Your Way."

During the course of Spider-Man Miles Morales, he proves himself as Harlem's own Friendly Neighborhood web slinger, with Peter even giving his blessing. Even though the game's ending set up the inevitable team up that will be shown off in Spider-Man 2, this does beg the question... following the source material... will Insomniac kill off Peter, leaving Miles the only Spider-man in that universe? This would understandly make a lot of fans upset, and there is also the subset of fans who think that Miles is not a "real" Spider-Man in the first place. A bold and complex storytelling deciosn to be sure, but this shift would further solidify Miles need to be New York's one and only Spider-Man, even if it was only out of neccessity. Gamers don't take too kindly to their beloved characters being taken from us-- Just ask Neil Druckmann about the backlash over Joel's death in Last of Us part 2.

Either way, our questions will be answered when Spider-Man 2 releases on October 20th.
