No Rest for the Wicked is the Action RPG I Didn't Know I Needed

Writer: Sam DeLongSam DeLong

No Rest for the Wicked has been on my radar for a while, but the final product is even better than I had hoped thanks for its slick visuals, addictive combat, and a amazing level of community engagement. While at first glance No Rest for the Wicked might be seen as a Diablo-like, the combat is more akin to a souls-like, with its emphasis on parrying and dodge-rolling.

Another unique element is the procedurally generated weapon drops -- an idea done very intentionally by the devs -- enocouraging multiple play throughs with different characters. My initial first play-though I created a red-haired Red Sonja Inspired warrior, a strength heavy tank with a giant two handed Claymore blade. The game's weight class system slows your moment as you gain more gear -- light or no armour allows you speed dash, while the heavier weights turns that dodge into a roll. I stripped my redhead down to her skivvies during a boss fight allowing her to take advantage of the aforementioned speed dash -- the perfect blend of speed and raw power.

Early quests will also unlock vendors in your hub world town of Sacrament. Black Smiths, lodging and other folks with appear there as you rescue them and do quests for them in the open world. Upgrading the town also invovles a base building meahanic -- giving an identity to not only the town, but adding a layer of stakes to the story at large. You can cook at fires and mine for materials using pick axes and shovels.

Moon Studios has become known for its high end visuals with its Ori franchise, and No West for Wicked has a beautiful and exaggerated art style -- pause the game and you might think you are looking at concept art. The color palate is akin to a water color painting. The game has an amazing level of polish for an early access game -- and while not perfect runs surprisingly well even in its unoptimized state.

The point of an early access game is in theory for the community to follow along with its growing development as it grows towards a 1.0 release. Moon Studios has been very active on Twitter, sharing updates with the community. In the initial first few days, several HOT FIX UPDATES have been released. Moon studios has also been very open about their Road Map plans, which includes the addition of multiplayer, as well as an eventual console release.

With gorgeous visuals, an engaging story, and layered and accessible combat -- No Rest For the Wicked is carving out quite a place in the action RPG space -- borrowing unique elements from souls likes and recent Zelda games, its clear that Moon Studios has stumbled onto something special here -- and its just a few patches away from true greatness.
