How I Get Interviews at Events

Updated: Aug 24

When I started going to conventions a few years ago, I decided on a whim that I was going to try and secure interviews with the guests -- voice actors, celebrites and the like. The first year I did it, I didnt even have a Press Pass. Shortly before this, I was able to book an interview with Jedi Survivor voice actress Debra Wilson. I reached out to her on Cameo, and was at first was only reaching out for a two mintue video greeting.

For the most part, a Conventions are not typicaly where these guests will do press, and most of the time, it is a question of wheather or not they are willing to do it. Typically, there are two press agencies at conventions -- with the guest having a member of their booking agency, as well as the third party company that is facilitating the autographs.

In some cases, the booking agent has already put in a NO PRESS restictian at events. This is also done because the agent is protecting their clients -- unless an interview is set up ahead of time. The venue for these conventions typically is not willing, or is not allowed to act as a go between becuase they dont really have a professoinal relationship with the agency. That being said, some voice actors will be open to doing press if there is time, and if the crowds have died down. Sometimes this means doing so on the first or last day, when there are typically less people. At San Franciso Fan Expo it took me 2 days to get an interview with all four cast members of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

When approaching guests I usually pay for autograph. In essence, you are paying them for their time. If it is a yes, I try and work around their schdule. For the most part, I rarely am told a flat out no, and if it is a no, it usually comes from an agent, and not from actors themselves.

Daemon Clark and Troy Baker would have been happy to agree to an interview, but they needed to clear it with their agents first, as their contracts do not typicaly allow them to agree to Press on the fly. As I prepare for the next San Franciso Fan Expo in Novemer -- I am trying to land an interivew with Daredevil star Charlie Cox. Will Happen? Only his agent knows for sure.
